About Us ― TREFF401 Classical Pilates Studio in Harajuku TOKYO

“What if Classical Pilates had its own FUN/FAN club in Japan?”
TREFF401 began with that simple idea.
We teach Classical Pilates — a method that works the entire body through strength, stretch, and control.
Each session flows continuously from one exercise to the next, allowing you to remain fully engaged in the work.
While training and studying it abroad, we noticed something different.
Pilates is not a trend.
It is a way of life.
Woven naturally into everyday life and the rhythm of the community.
People of different ages, backgrounds, and professions come together in the studio,
connected through a shared appreciation for movement.

Some come to stand taller and move with confidence.
Some come to keep dancing for as long as they can.
Some come to stay strong enough to ski next winter — and the one after that.
Some live with scoliosis, yet choose to take ownership of their bodies as they are.
Everyone arrives with a different body and a different capacity for movement.
But rather than being defined by limitation, they take responsibility for their bodies
— and, more importantly, they enjoy the process.
To bring this culture to Japan, a group of like-minded instructors came together, sharing the same vision.
“FUN/FAN”
FUN — the joy of movement.
FAN — those who love Classical Pilates.
Welcome to the Classical Pilates FUN/FAN Club.

Meet The Instructors

HIROKO KUMAKURA
Founder of TREFF401 and a board member of the Japan Classical Pilates Association.
Since 2024, Hiroko has been studying at Pilates Haus in New Jersey under Brett Howard and Tetsuo Yoshida, deepening her understanding of Classical Pilates.
In 2026, she earned her certification through Classical Pilates USA.
Born in 1965, Hiroko is often the most senior participant in workshops and teacher training programs. Nevertheless, she continues to discover new possibilities in movement and in her own physical potential.
She hopes her ongoing journey serves as encouragement and inspiration for others, regardless of age.
She has never felt much need for the phrase “Age is just a number”.
Appointments are available primarily on weekends and weekday evenings.
Flexible scheduling can be arranged upon consultation to accommodate your needs.

YUKI KATO
In 2007, Yuki earned her Romana’s Pilates certification at True Pilates New York.
She later spent two years teaching private sessions and group classes at Equinox Sports Club and re:AB Pilates in New York City.
After returning to Japan during the early years of Pilates development in the country, Yuki built a large and loyal clientele while establishing herself as a respected voice within the Classical Pilates community in Japan.
Drawing on the expertise and professional connections she cultivated in New York, she has played an important role in supporting and mentoring Pilates instructors throughout Japan.
While firmly rooted in the Classical Pilates tradition, Yuki brings creativity and innovation to her teaching. She has a unique gift for uncovering the hidden potential within each body, helping clients discover new possibilities in movement and within themselves.
Regular sessions are available every Friday from 9:30 a.m.
Weekend appointments can also be arranged upon request.

NAOKO UCHIYAMA
Having studied modern dance and ballet since the age of six, Naoko developed a strong interest in injury prevention and healthy movement.
In 2002, she began studying under Junko Takada, Professor Emerita of the University of the Sacred Heart, Tokyo. As an assistant to Ms. Takada — one of the pioneers of Pilates in Japan and a direct student of Romana Kryzanowska — Naoko supported classes and research while deepening her own study of Pilates.
In 2011, she earned her Romana’s Pilates certification at True Pilates New York.
With many years of experience working with older adults, Naoko is well known for creating sessions that help clients feel safe, capable, and confident.
Her calm and attentive teaching style makes Pilates accessible to beginners while supporting long-term health and well-being.
Appointments can be arranged flexibly to accommodate your schedule.

YUMIKO MORIKAWA
身体の軸を整え、自由な表現の基盤を作ります。都会的で洗練された空間で、心身を解放するダンス体験を。
In 2018, Yumiko completed her Classical Pilates certification at Classical Pilates South Africa in Johannesburg. She trained under Natasha Madel, a former ballet dancer who studied directly under Romana Kryzanowska.
Yumiko later moved to London, where she gained extensive teaching experience at New York Pilates, a long-established studio known for its diverse international clientele.
There, she worked with clients from a wide range of ages, professions, and cultural backgrounds, further refining her teaching skills.
Even after returning to Japan in 2025, she continues to maintain strong ties with the London studio where she taught and remains closely connected with colleagues and teachers abroad.
Believing that Pilates should be enjoyable, Yumiko brings positive energy and a genuine love of movement to every session.
She is also the person behind the “Classical Pilates FUN/FAN Club” concept.
